Appealing your property tax assessment

When it's worth it, and how to prepare.

6 min read

If your assessed value is higher than your home is worth, or the record has errors, you can usually appeal. Deadlines are strict, so check them early.

Signs it may be worth it

  • Errors in your property record (wrong size, extra bathroom)
  • Similar nearby homes are assessed for less
  • Your home has problems the assessor doesn't know about

How

  1. Find the appeal deadline and process on your county's website
  2. Gather evidence: recent sales of similar homes, photos of problems, repair estimates
  3. Start with an informal review if your county offers one
  4. File the formal appeal before the deadline if needed

General information. Processes and deadlines are set locally. Better Home Budget isn't paid by any lender, insurer or contractor.
